As we head into Autumn, youngsters across the country will be starting school or college and mixing with their friends again - which can see an increase in seasonal illnesses.
GPs at RPC Derbyshire, who look after 47,000 patients across nice practises, nearly 10,000 of which are under 18 years old, are urging parents to stock up on medicine cabinet essentials and be back to school ready as the new term kicks off.
Dr Naren Nathan, a GP Trainer and Interim Deputy Clinical Director Royal Primary Care, said: “At this time of the year we often see a surge in viruses, coughs and colds, especially as youngsters return to school or college. These illnesses can often be unpleasant but can usually be treated at home with rest, a few key medications and plenty of liquid to keep them hydrated. There are lots of self-care remedies available and people don’t usually need to see their doctor. Obviously, if your child is unwell and you are worried, then your GP is always there for you, but often if it is a virus or common cold then the best course of action is treating this at home.
“I would suggest that it would be good to have a supply of the essentials such as Calpol, cough syrup, nit remedy, vapour rub and a good children’s daily vitamin (or at least vitamin C and Zinc) to keep little ones healthy and help them recover quicker from any sniffles. We know it is really important that children and teenagers are able to make the most of their education, especially after being off for the summer holidays, so having a few essentials ready in the cupboard can be really helpful.”
RPC is also urging patients to Think Pharmacy First as local pharmacies can often provide an important first point of contact for a range of concerns and can help with clinical advice and treatment for a range of minor illnesses – including sore throats, earache and sinusitis.
Dr Nathan added: “A local pharmacy is often a good place to seek help for common conditions and get over the counter medicines. It’s also not just stocking up and planning for the children too, as we know that coughs and colds can spread quite quickly – so parents and grandparents could do with having a look at their medicine cabinet and keeping a few items handy for themselves.”
