Our trauma and orthopaedic unit comprises of highly specialised consultants supported by a multi-disciplinary team of nurses, therapists and other clinical staff. We provide a 24-hour inpatient service dealing with patients who attend with orthopaedic injuries. Through our outpatient Virtual Fracture Service, we can ensure that patients are provided with the most up to date treatment protocols for their injury and, when needed, gain rapid access to our specialist surgeons avoiding delay to receiving urgent care.
Our team of twelve consultants provide cutting edge and advanced surgical treatments covering a wide range of orthopaedic conditions and sub-specialties. Certain complex trauma, spinal problems, and paediatric patients are referred on for treatment through our close collaboration with regional centres in Sheffield and Nottingham.
We are a teaching hospital and receive medical students from Sheffield and Nottingham. In addition, we are a partner hospital for training orthopaedic surgeons from the East Midlands training programme. Our hospital also hosts international fellowship trainees comprising of visiting surgeons from around the world.

Our Outpatient Department in Suite 1 is located just adjacent to the main entrance of the hospital. Here we see patients that have had injuries or following surgery as well as elective patients with orthopaedic problems.
Fracture clinics are run daily and usually are staffed with 2 surgeons. Due to the emergencies being unpredictable, at times the clinic can be very busy. The clinic will also have facilities for wound care and plaster application and removal. Experienced nurses and plaster technicians will be present to advise you.
The clinic is also staffed with specialised physiotherapists and occupational therapists that see and treat patients within their respective specialty and support the consultant led service. Together we see almost 600 new patients a month.

We have four orthopaedic theatres equipped with state of the art equipment capable of providing capacity for approximately 3,000 operations a year.
As a busy district general hospital serving the peak district, we are accustomed to a high volume of emergency cases and as such we run a trauma list 7 days a week to accommodate for this.
At Chesterfield we take great pride in providing the latest innovation in surgery through a consultant led service. A wide ranging scope of treatments is available both in upper and lower limb surgery.

Our Virtual Fracture Service (VFS) has been running since 2019. All patients with orthopaedic injuries attending either the Whitworth Minor Injuries Unit or the Emergency Department that do not require immediate admission to hospital are referred to the VFS.
Your attendance is triaged by the Orthopaedic team the following day to ensure that you are seen by the most appropriate member of the team. Sometimes, you will not require an appointment and advice will be provided instead. If you require treatment by a physiotherapist or occupational therapist then we will refer you directly for this.
If a face to face appointment or a telephone consultation is needed then you will be contacted within 5 days with an appointment.
As a result of implementation, we have seen a reduction in the delay for patients seeing the most appropriate clinician and receiving the most appropriate treatment whilst avoiding unnecessary attendances to the clinic.
