The Medical Microbiology department deals with the investigation of micro-organisms including bacteria, fungi and parasites which are capable of causing disease in humans. The department offers a full analytical service with a comprehensive repertoire of diagnostic tests, including bacterial isolation, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, antibody/antigen detection and Chlamydia screening.
The laboratory also provides an andrology service for fertility investigations only by appointment, please contact the laboratory to arrange an appointment.

The Microbiology department has recently acquired the Qiastat® ME analyser for rapid detection of encephalitis and meningitis. This assay detects the 14 main viral, bacterial and fungal pathogens within 76 minutes from CSF samples providing rapid patient care.
