Welcome to the Endoscopy FAQ page, a resource for answers to common questions about your procedure.

Yes – You can bring one adult with you to your appointment. They will be asked to leave once you are admitted into the endoscopy unit. They will be contacted when you are in our recovery area and can meet you once you have been discharged to the designated waiting area.

Yes – We suggest you bring a bag that you can place your clothes and personal items in whilst you are having your procedure.  However, gowns are provided in the unit and you will need to change into one prior to your procedure.

We ask you to allow for 3 hours for your procedure, however, some procedures do take less time than others and if you choose to not have sedation your time with us will be much shorter for example. Please also be mindful that the admission time stated on your letter is the time that you are required to be admitted to the unit and is not the procedure time.

If you have chosen to have sedation for your procedure you will NOT be able to drive or be left alone for 24 hours after the time of the procedure.

Therefore, if you live alone and have sedation you will need to arrange to stay with a relative or friend or for them to stay with you at home. If you do not have anyone, please contact our pre-assessment team who can look into other options that may be available to you.

You must not eat before any of our procedures, please follow the specific instructions you have been given that are relevant to the procedure you are having. These will have been provided along with your appointment letter and discussed at your pre-assessment appointment.
