Colorectal Surgery

The Colorectal Team provides a comprehensive service for patients with problems arising from the small bowel, colon, rectum and anal region and is supported by two Specialist Nurses. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease are treated in conjunction with the Gastroenterology Team whilst women who have pelvic floor problems are managed jointly with the Gynaecologists.

Patients with suspected colorectal cancer can be seen in rapid access outpatient clinic. A comprehensive, nationally accredited, bowel-screening programme is provided in conjunction with the Consultant Gastroenterologist.

A Consultant Oncologist from Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield attends a weekly meeting in Chesterfield and also has a clinic in Chesterfield to see colorectal cancer patients needing radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Patients with bowel tumours are managed by the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and operations are performed here in Chesterfield. The Colorectal team has a commitment to quality with many of the more complex procedures being performed by two consultants operating together. Advanced endoscopic techniques including Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) and colorectal stenting are available and there is an established programme of laparoscopic bowel resection for suitable patients. A Consultant Oncologist from Western Park Hospital in Sheffield attends the weekly MDT meeting in Chesterfield and also has a clinic in Chesterfield to see colorectal cancer patients needing radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
