Chronic Pain Management Service

The Chronic Pain Management Service is provided by a multi-professional team comprising of consultant anaesthetists, nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists, and administrative and care staff all working as a team to help support people who are dealing with long-term pain. Patients seen in the clinic often suffer from muscular-skeletal pain such as back and neck pain, fibromyalgia and less common neuropathic pains such as trigeminal neuralgia and post-herpetic neuralgia.

Patients are seen as outpatients on the whole and are provided with support, assessment and a variety of treatments to help them manage their pain in the longer term. Some of these treatments include injection therapies, medications, psychology, lifestyle advice and complementary therapies such as hypnosis. The Chronic Pain Service treats 8,000 chronic pain patients a year in the clinic alone, also providing 1,000-day case treatments including epidural injections and facet joint injections.

An important part of the Chronic Pain Management Service is that of patient information and a reader panel of existing patients has recently been developed to review the literature we provide. This has been invaluable to the development of the quality of patient information and we hold the reader panel input in high regard. The reader panel itself is made up of a variety of patients, who receive treatment here at the Royal.

The service also provides education and training to a broad range of professionals, both locally and nationally.

The pain clinic is situated in suite 6 and we provide disabled parking for our patients outside suite 6. We value patient choice as our new clinics provide the choose and book option to allow them to have their choice of appointment.
