Down Syndrome is a common genetic condition caused by an extra chromosome. Many people with Down Syndrome do not require any support from Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) and there are recognised milestones for social interaction, understanding and expressive language use in this population.
Our pathway for Down Syndrome ensures we are notified of all babies born with Down Syndrome in our area and we offer a video appointment at 8 months for families to check in with the SLT service for some early advice and signposting. If your child is not following the typical developmental pattern for Down Syndrome then they can be referred to SLT when they see the Health Visitor for the 2 1/2 year check or if you or the school have later concerns.
If you would like some guidance on ways to support your child’s communication, the links below from the Down Syndrome Association may be helpful.
Our SLT service periodically runs Makaton training sessions but many free resources, including Sign of the Week and details of online training for Makaton stages 1-4 are available on the Makaton Website.
