The North Derbyshire Breast Screening Service is part of the National Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and invites around 20,000 women for screening each year.
Breast screening is offered to women aged 50 – 70 years and 11 months, once every three years.
You'll first be invited for breast screening within 3 years of your 50th birthday.
The aim of breast screening is to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage, often before a woman is aware of any problem. Early detection may mean simpler and more successful treatment. The latest research shows that the NHS breast Screening Programme is now saving 1,300 lives every year in England. For every 200 women screened 1 life will be saved.
You can read more about Breast screening on the NHS Choices website.
Some women are eligible for breast screening before the age of 50 if they have a high risk of developing breast cancer. Having a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer may put you in this category, if you are concerned regarding this then please speak with your GP in the first instance.
Nationally women are no longer routinely invited for screening after their 71st birthday, however, should you wish to continue attending you can request a free mammogram every 3 years. Before you attend this appointment you should read the NHS '71 or over? You can still have breast screening if you choose' leaflet. This will explain the possible benefits and risks of breast screening in women over 71.
Women are invited for their screening appointment to either our town centre screening unit (Scarsdale) or one of our mobile units that visit various locations within North Derbyshire.
Please note that due to limited facilities, we cannot accommodate children on our mobile units.
If one of the following areas is more convenient for you, please phone us and we’ll try our best to change your appointment.

After having your breast screening appointment, your mammograms are carefully examined by two specialists and we aim to get your results letter to you within 2-3 weeks.
If your screening mammogram has shown something that needs further assessment, you will be asked to come to the Breast unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.
At this appointment, a radiologist or radiographer will explain what the concern is and suggest further tests which might include clinical examination, magnification views, tomosynthesis, ultrasound scan and /or needle biopsies. More information can be found on 'your scecond visit to the breast screening unit' leaflet available on our website.
We can usually do these tests on the same morning as the appointment. However, if biopsies are taken, the results take longer as these have to be examined under the microscope in the pathology laboratory, so we will arrange another appointment for you to receive these results.
